Up and Back

October 26, 2010 § Leave a comment

I have just gotten back from Glens Falls New York.  It is a lovely little town in upstate New York.  There were lakes, mountains, and forests in autumn colors.  I saw a great number of  Red-tailed Hawks on the way up perched on trees along the roadside.  I had always thought that hawks chased, caught and eat other birds, which they do, but I learned that the red-tail’s primary food is rodents.  They sit in high trees or electric poles over looking open places and drop on unsuspecting rodents.  I was expecting high speed aerial chases and this is what this sort of  hawk is about.  (Nothing much to see here).

Anyhow I got some work done on my current painting.  This is how it looks at the moment.

Man or Beast?

October 22, 2010 § Leave a comment

I have started a painting. The figure was intended to be human, an odd looking human, as I sometimes make them, but a human none the less. The figure I drew was lion like however. Not my intention. In this case however I decided to go with it. The thing is, not everything is in your control when making art. It is important to recognize the mistakes and also the gifts that mistakes can provide. Perhaps it is wrong to call them mistakes…perhaps I should call them events.

Getting back to painting

Now the trick will be to get back to work in my New York Studio. I am out on a trip on Sunday so I can’t get myself motivated to start something or even continue work on something already started. Well that is the way of things….

Painting in Progress 10/19/2010

I did not get as much painting done today as I would like.  The boat was painted but I am not certain that it will remain yellow.  So there is work yet to do but,  not until I return.  I leave tomorrow morning for New York City.

You might ask, what book was I crying over, so before I forget, it was Secret Sacrament, by Sherryl Jordan

Painting Progress 10/18/2010

I can’t say that I painted non stop all day. ( Now that is how I am supposed to be going at this thing… or is it?) I have painted on and off throughout the day, and finished a book I have been reading and crying over.  A good tale!.  Any how I finished the book and good some painting done as well.  My figure may be overly pink but I will work with it.  I guess I will tackle the boat tomorrow. Light was coming in through the basement window so it was hard to get a good pic this time.

My basement studio, Minneapolis

October 17, 2010 § Leave a comment

First I should say, as a New Yorker, how much I enjoy the city of Minneapolis. I even got a fishing license this summer.  There is no better city for biking.  I kid my friends here about this being the frontier, and that they  smack on pemmican, ( a Native American, corn, grease, dried meat and dried berries meal) but I really do enjoy this part of the world.

I am using a friends basement here as a makeshift studio.  In it I can work on larger paintings.  Larger than the postcard size works I can do in my New York apartment/studio.

Working large allows me to uses not just my fingers in the mark making process but my arms, and whole body as well.  It is a nice change.

This is what is up on the board at the moment.
